|Track:||06: Food for Thought: Innovative Ideas in School Food and Waste Management|
|Full Description:||Attendees will participate in a food preparation and taste test, using fresh produce harvested from a local school garden. We will explore how naturally we can address math and literacy standards while exposing students to nutritious eating habits. Following the food preparation, we will brainstorm and share strategies for making lessons in gardening, environmental stewardship, and nutrition relevant to various content areas we are already teaching across grade levels.
Participants will have the opportunity to consider and adjust the modeled lesson to meet their students' particular needs. We will also explore how relevant and engaging hands-on and outdoor activities such as this are ideal for including components of science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) into every day instruction. Participants will leave the workshop with an outline for a similar lesson they can take to their own classroom.
